Dove – Evolution

Posted in Uncategorized by Anthony (Tony) Emerson on April 29, 2007

I hope you’ve already seen this. I’ve caught it in class, on Good Morning America, as a TV spot and online at

As part of the Dove Self-Esteem Fund program, the goal of this ad is to make girls feel more confident about themselves. I’ve regularly noticed people – mostly women – pointing out obvious “airbrushing” of models in ads for at least 7 or 8 years (when I first got a copy of Photoshop). I think it’s a way to make them feel better.

I’ve heard shouts of hypocrisy founded on various bases (bases as in the plural of basis): Unilever’s not-so-green production, or their ownership of the Axe and Lynx brands that objectify women (and were began as EGO), or animal testing, or slave labor. I think this is the best one: Unilever’s 1933 Rinso ad.
